Optical information: Detailed information on Eye Glass and contacts use

Routine Eye Exam:  Offering extensive eye exam for the routine check-up or if you are experienceing problems

Macular Degeneration: The greatest risk factor is age. Although AMD may occur during middle age, studies show that people over age 60 are clearly at greater risk than other age groups. For instance, a large study found that people in middle-age have about a 2 percent risk of getting AMD, but this risk increased to nearly 30 percent in those over age 75.

Other risk factors include:

  • Smoking. Smoking may increase the risk of AMD.
  • Obesity. Research studies suggest a link between obesity and the progression of early and intermediate stage AMD to advanced AMD.
  • Race. Whites are much more likely to lose vision from AMD than African Americans.
  • Family history. Those with immediate family members who have AMD are at a higher risk of developing the disease.
  • Gender. Women appear to be at greater risk than men.

Diabetic Eye (Retinopathy): If you have diabetes, you are at a higher risk of developing eye disease. Diabetes specialists recommend you take steps to protect your vision and make sure to have your eyes examined by an ophthalmologist at least once a year. Your eyes should be dilated during the exam. That means eye drops are used to enlarge your pupils to allow the eye care professional to examine the retina in the back of the eye. Finding and treating the disease before it causes vision loss or blindness is the best way to control diabetic eye disease.

Dry Eye:  Tears aren't just for crying. They help moisturize and lubricate the eye to help you see. However, if your eyes feel dry, irritated and uncomfortable, you may have a condition known as chronic dry eye.

This happens when the eyes don't produce the right amount and right quality of tears. Tears are a combination of water, oils, mucus and special proteins, which are secreted by special glands around the eye. Chronic dry eye occurs when there is an imbalance of these substances and not enough tears to lubricate the eye

Laser Eye
Outpatient surgery: On an outpatient basis you can have your laser eye surgery performed by local physician.  Light is focused, or refacted, by the cornea, the clear front "window" of the eye. Your vision is clear if the cornea and lens combine to focus an image precisely on the retina. The retina is the inner layer of the eye that senses light and helps you see. (Refractive Surgery)

Glaucoma, the leading cause of blindness in the United States, causes more than 120,000 Americans to lose their vision permanently each year. An additional 900,000 have experienced some form of vision loss or impairment. Moreover, it is estimated that over 50% of sufferers go undiagnosed.

Pressure check: Painlessly check your eye pressure without a puff of air.

Cataracts: Your vision can be restored by a surgical procedure that removes the cloudy lens and replaces it with an artificial lens. Cataracts can be removed at any stage of their development, but when is the best time to have your cataracts removed?

Astigmatism: The Corneal Topographer at New Ulm Eye Center can generate a computerized map of the surface of your cornea.

The topographer image will indicate the precise areas that, with Excimer Laser treatment, can be corrected to ensure better vision and a higher quality of life.
